I had the privilege of attending the PXE meeting, which took
place in the vibrant city of Budapest, Hungary, from October 1 to 3 October
2023. This gathering brought together a diverse assembly of about 60 scientists and physicians hailing from different countries, as well as several
representatives of the patient advocacy organization. The inaugural session of
the conference was dedicated to honoring the memory of the late Prof. Jouni
Uitto, who passed away in December 2022. Prof. Uitto was an influential and
revered figure in the field, renowned for his unwavering dedication to the
study of Pseudoxanthoma Elasticum (PEX).
PXE, as a prototype of heritable ectopic mineralization
disorders, took center stage. Alongside it, related conditions like Generalized
Arterial Calcification of Infancy (GACI) were explored, emphasizing the central
roles played by the ABCC6 and ENPP1 genes. The event covered a wide spectrum,
from the genetic aspects of PXE to animal models for therapies in clinical
trials, as well as the significance of biomarkers and social considerations. A
highlight of the gathering was the engaging and interactive round table
discussion.
Beyond the conference, I took an extra day to explore the
charming city of Budapest. The city itself offered a rich cultural experience,
making it a memorable complement to the enlightening scientific encounter.
